Harvard Blogging
Business Therapy

ImageI've started blogging for the Harvard Business online about my new venture, Jamseed. Here's the "story so far" section as a teaser.

This blog chronicles the trials and tribulations of three longtime friends who are trying to start an Internet music company called Jamseed. All three have day jobs, all have failed in the past with new ventures, and all hope that this company will bring them entrepreneurial redemption.

Getting Into Harvard
Business Therapy

Woot! Typo is the May 2008 Harvard Business Review Case Study. If you buy the print edition, there's a wonderful drawing of a very bald me. (Drawn by the incomparable Daniel Vasconcellos). If you read it online, you can imagine me with hair.

Anzac Typo
Business Therapy
ImageTypo is being published down under in Australia (and New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and Malaysia) this year. Does that mean I get to go to Australia? No. Not given the economics of the book business. But it does mean that for at least one print run, the sun will not set on Typo.

Best Book of 2007
Business Therapy
ImageTypo has been named the best entrepreneurial book of 2007 by Booz Allen's Strategy and Business magazine! To quote: "Because David Silverman does not flinch from sharing the most painful and revealing lessons of his journey, I name Typo my top pick among this year’s titles."

A Review in London's Independent
Business Therapy

ImageThe Independent had this, among other good things, to say about Typo:

"What really makes this book is the often entertaining picture it paints of the tribulations of trying to run a business. Much of Silverman's time before the catastrophe seems to be spent in meetings that are hijacked by the competing interests of those present. It is no wonder that at least one business school is making it mandatory reading for anyone considering starting their own business."

UC Davis: Typo as Textbook
Main
ImageProfessor Kimberly Elsbach at UC Davis' Graduate School of Management has picked Typo as a core textbook for her fall course on "Individual and Group Dynamics." That's right, 200 MBA students will be reading Typo on their summer break. Brilliant!

Leonard Lopate
Main

Image

I fulfilled my PR dream and was on the Leonard Lopate show recently. Was the best part going through the metal detectors at 1 Center Street saying, "I'm a guest on the Leonard Lopate Show?" Or having Brian Lehrer open the door to the studio? Or making Tina Brown wait while I said goodbye to Leonard?

No, the best part was being in the studio with Leonard Lopate. Priceless.

The Deal
Main
ImageLiam Brown, CEO of Integreon, wrote a wonderful review of Typo in The Deal. It's subscription only, so I'll just put my favorite quotes from the article here.

"I found myself wincing and laughing in all the right places (I hope), which is testimony to Silverman's ability to draw the reader into the story."

"Silverman makes it clear that his U.S. workers have no real concept that their livelihoods depend on successfully competing with someone in India who is right now working harder than they can every imagine..."

"Entrepreneurs will delight and relate to the predicament the author faces."

and, my very favorite,

"Wow! Wait until Lou Dobbs gets a hold of this book!"

Come to think of it, why hasn't Lou Dobbs gotten a hold of my book?

Charkin Blog
Main

ImageRichard Charkin, CEO of Macmillan UK, has both a blog and the nicest thing ever to say about Typo.

"The book, Typo, is published by Soft Skull Press, an independent house in Brooklyn. Its subject matter is unpromising - 350 pages about a typesetting company going bust. It is absolutely brilliant. Everyone in the publishing business should read it and most people in any sort of business should too.... Do yourself a favour and read it."

The Wall Street Journal says: "TYPO, a memoir about buying a typesetting company, is amusing, appalling, infuriating and wonderfully written."
